On-site Shechita Service

Have knife, will travel…

Rabbi Edelstein is excited to help you in fulfilling your needs for kosher meat within a traditional-egalitarian framework.

There are a lot of moving parts to conducting a shect (slaughter), and Rabbi Edelstein will need to have several conversations and emails with you regarding the scope of the shecht, the space available at your location, equipment at your and Rabbi Edelstein’s disposal for the shect, and the care and welfare of the animals involved.

Once you and Rabbi Edelstein agree that you are a good fit for each other, and the necessary requirements on the part of the farm/homestead are met (or will be by the time of the shecht, a deposit for service must be made.

Full fees and payments will be discussed as part of the consultation process.

However, kosher politics are complicated, and because of Rabbi Edelstein’s affiliation with the Masorti (Conservative) Jewish Movement, most orthodox Jews likely will not hold by Rabbi Edelstein’s hechsher (kosher certification)—keep in mind that many orthodox rabbis do not accept other orthodox rabbis’ certifications due to various reasons, and not being accepted by orthodoxy does not mean that something is not kosher according to Torah and Rabbinic traditions and law.

  • Not exactly, but fewer animals means the cost per animal increases. This is more noticeable with fowl, but applies to sheep, goats, and bovine as well.

  • Depending on the type of animal being processed, Rabbi Edelstein will provide you with a list of needed equipment, for example: for fowl, bleeding (also called “kill”) cones are needed to hold the slaughtered birds while the blood drains. For sheep/goats, a sturdy table, for bovine, a squeeze chute with head support. Every case needs a few tables, bins, water, and other specifics.
